As the cost of heating and electricity continue to grow, ACAP Cape Breton is giving homeowners the opportunity to be advised on how to lessen these costs while helping battle climate change.

ACAP Cape Breton’s Certified Energy Advisors perform a Blower Door Depressurization Test as well as supply a detailed report of the home’s energy efficiency. Our Certified Energy Advisors also evaluate the following areas:

• Air leakages
• Insulation values
• Space heating
• Ventilation
• Hot Water
• Lights and appliances
• Heat losses

When completed Energy advisors will offer recommendations on how to improve problem areas, bringing your home to a comfortable and efficient level of living.

Reducing the amount of energy that Canadians use in their homes is part of Canada’s climate change solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve our environment.

While the federal government no longer will be accepting new applications for the ECO-energy retrofit program as of March 31 2010, Conserve Nova Scotia and Nova Scotia Power Inc. will continue to contribute and participate in the EnerGuide for Houses Program. Both organizations have incentives for eligible homes which have completed energy efficiency upgrades.

To be eligible for any rebates, you must first book an EnerGuide evaluation before you conduct any upgrades to your home (the rebates are not retroactive).

The Fee for both the pre and post home evaluations on a single dwelling is $150.00 for a house under 3,500 sq ft of heated volume, payable at the time of the energy audit.

If your home is electrically-heated, completing energy efficiency upgrades can save you energy costs annually. Nova Scotia Power Inc has added new incentives to the Conserve Nova Scotia EGH program. Rebates are for electric space and water heating efficiency measures such as drain water heat recovery units, solar water heating systems and heat pumps, for a complete list of rebate incentives visit: http://www.nspower.ca/en/home/default.aspx.

There are also interest-free loans available to all qualifying Nova Scotians participating in the Nova Scotia EnerGuide for Houses of up to $5,000 upon approval.

For low to modest income Nova Scotians, the Province will refund your cost of the visit. This applies to single homeowners with a net income of less than $25,000 or a family with a net income of less than $40,000. Also, you will receive an additional $400 on top of any regular rebate you qualify for http://www.conservens.ca/energuide/existing-houses/default.asp

The amount of the rebate incentive depends on which qualified energy upgrade you complete on your home – it is based as a prescribed amount for specific upgrades indicated on your Home Energy Plan Report.

Homeowners who have registered into the program prior to midnight March 31st 2010 remain eligible for federal and provincial incentives. Those that registered as of April 1st 2010 are eligible for the Provincial and if applicable the NSPI rebate incentives only.
