Overview: World Water Day is held annually on March 22. Together, ACAP Cape Breton and the CBRM Water Utility are holding an essay competition for graduating high school students, for the chance to win a $1,000 scholarship.

This year, we are asking scholarship applicants to focus on the role young people can play in the protection of local freshwater sources and ecosystems.

We are asking applicants to write a 500-750 word essay on what youth can do to support the protection and conservation of freshwater in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality?

To help your thinking, consider the following questions. These questions are intended to guide your thinking and you do not have to answer all of them in your essay. Your essay should be in paragraph form, and not question-and-answer style.

  • Why is freshwater important?

  • What water issues affect the Cape Breton Regional Municipality?

  • How can youth help to protect and conserve water resources? How are youth voices currently represented in municipal decision-making for environmental protection? What kinds of actions could young people lead

Please include your name, school, contact information (phone number and email)

Thank you for your interest and submission! Best of luck to all applicants!
